Muzafer Sherif's research on the autokinetic effect is a good example of the role of ____________ in perception. People in his experiments were told that a spot of light projected on the wall would move and were instructed to estimate the amount of movement. Although the spot of light never actually moved, the people inevitably reported movement. When told that the spot of light would even trace out letters and words, participants began reporting words and sentences.
