Young people are fast learners. They are energetic, active and have a ‘can-do’ mentality. Given the support and right opportunities, they can take the lead in their own development as well as the development of their communities. In many developing countries, agriculture is still the largest employer and young farmers play an important role in ensuring food security for future generations. They face many challenges, however. For example, it is very difficult to own land or get a loan if you do not have a house―which, if you are young and only just starting your career, is often not yet possible. Working in agriculture requires substantial and long-term investments. It is also quite risky and uncertain, because it relies heavily on the climate: flooding, drought and storms can damage and destroy farmers’ crops and affect livestock.
